Michael Lo, MCIArb is a skilled barrister with a broad civil and criminal practice, specializing in construction, commercial disputes, and international arbitration. He regularly appears as sole advocate or led junior before the High Court, District Court, and Magistrates’ Court. His civil practice encompasses construction litigation as well as insolvency, shareholder, and land-related matters. He is a co-author of Construction Law and Practice in Hong Kong and frequently delivers visiting lectures on topics such as contract law and tendering.
In arbitration, Michael has acted in high-stakes proceedings involving major construction projects, aviation transactions, and arbitration-related court applications under the Arbitration Ordinance (Cap. 609). His experience spans both claimant and respondent roles in construction, aviation, commercial, and shareholder disputes, including Hong Kong-seated arbitrations governed by Macau law. He also serves as a Panel Arbitrator at the World Trade Center Macau Arbitration Center.
Michael maintains an active criminal and regulatory practice. He regularly defends clients in general criminal trials. On the regulatory side, he has represented cryptocurrency exchanges and OTC vendors in investigations by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), advising on licensing obligations, compliance strategies, and enforcement risks—particularly in relation to virtual asset trading platforms. He also delivers CPD-accredited lectures on cryptocurrency regulation.
He read law at the University of Bristol and completed the PCLL at City University of Hong Kong. He undertook his pupillage with Mr. Gary Soo at Gary Soo’s Chambers, Mr. Richard Leung JP at Des Voeux Chambers, and Ms. Catherine Wong and Mr. Clement Lau at Plowman Chambers. Born and raised in Macau, Michael brings a regional perspective to his practice.
